I am not an AI person but I do work as a software engineer. My experience has been that AI can tremendously shorten parts of the software lifecycle. This is remarkable considering that these tools (LLMs) were not trained specifically for this. There is *something* there, not nothing. In a tangential area, mathematics, there has been success in training LLMs to solve hard math problems. Interestingly, to me, the most promising area is having the AI learn LEAN, a theorem proving language. But for both these areas, software and math, progress has been much higher in the last five years than in the last twenty, seemingly. I *do* agree that there is a bubble. But something useful will still be left after the "pop".
